Protect Your Loved Ones
On behalf of the Toronto Real Estate Board and the Education Department, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting the “Personal Safety” seminar that was presented at the Board offices. The seminar was very well received and Members commented that it was an excellent opportunity to learn about personal safety.

Anne Mackay,
Administrative Secretary, Education,
Toronto Real Estate Board

As you are aware, several of the Board’s Geographical Divisions have now held a 'Hands Off' Seminar. While I have not been involved in the seminars presented for the various Divisions of the Board, I did participate in one sponsored by the Board for its female staff members, and found the session to be most worth while in teaching a variety of self-defense techniques, together with a great deal of general know-how on the subject.

Divisional Secretary,

Safety for Realtors

In the United States a total of 227 agents died as a result of violent assaults from 1992 to 2001. That is over 22 per year. Many more were beaten, raped, or robbed.

Protect Yourself

These are alarming statistics, and we use them not to shock you but to illustrate the importance of taking safety precautions in your everyday work. The very nature of showing real estate can be risky for both men and women.

Using common sense and following basic safety tips, we have compiled information from both the criminals who commit these crimes as well as the victims and other real estate associations from around the world.

In researching the hundreds of articles and news stories written about this subject, we found in nearly every assault the victim could have done something to prevent the incident if only they had trusted their instincts.

“House for Sale” is a feature film highlighting the dangers that are present for realtors. Hundreds of realtors have been attacked in the last decade across North America.

Sadly many have lost their lives because they didn’t have the tools necessary to recognize and protect themselves from potentially violent encounters. In February 2007 young realtor Lindsay Buziak was murdered whilst showing a property in Victoria.

In response to this important social issue we have developed a realtor safety program, book and feature film which will become a part of a continuing education credit for the more than 90,000 realtors across Canada.

The program includes a DVD and a book containing full descriptions of techniques covered. With a little practice participants build confidence, a confidence that will show and that is a goal of this safety program.
